MY REVIEW OF 'HER'

Recently, I have seen the film Her. The film is classed under ‘Indie, Romance, Sci-fi’, now when I read that I was equally confused and intrigued. Indie films are a massive part of my film taste as we have a really cute cinema in Oxford called the Pheonix Picturehouse which I really enjoy going to – I just had to watch this.

Now, the film is about a man called Theodore that falls in love with his Operating System. The film features love, loss, and how technology frequently invades our lives and what may happen if that becomes too intense. The story follows Theodore’s life through his divorce with a girl, and how he’s struggling to cope with that, alongside his two friends and the Operating System. Scarlett Johansson is in the film as well, which I thought was another reason to watch it.

Although it feels like that gives away the plot for the entire film, it’s actually not the most important part. A lot of deep topics arise, among things such as whether it’s the meaning of life, how to progress when you feel you can’t anymore and learning about how falling in love can make someone irrationally happy.

One of my favourite quotes from the film was:

"Amy: You know what, I can over think everything and find a million ways to doubt myself. And since Charles left I've been really thinking about that part of myself and, I've just come to realize that, we're only here briefly. And while I'm here, I wanna allow myself joy. So f**k it."

This really spoke to me for some reason. Not only is it quite sad that she views life as a brief encounter, but that she just comes to the conclusion that life is worth allowing joy into her life. It was just at a point in the film which made it poignant.

Make your own mind up about this film. It’s weird, partially predictable and lovable. Joaquin Phoenix played Theodore and he did a magnificent job, supported by Amy Adams and Scarlett Johansson as mentioned before.
