MY REVIEW OF 'WHIPLASH'

Today was the day I went to see Whiplash, after being turned down by a friend I decided to go by myself and it was totally the right decision. Not only was it all about music, but it was an incredible film. In my opinion, they literally did not put a foot wrong. Also, I couldn’t watch some of it so I would have got incredibly embarrassed.

What stood out to me, was the fact that I did not breathe for the entire film (well, that’s how I felt anyway). It was intense and when I came out the film, I felt rather disorientated and odd – I’m not sure whether there is a better way to describe it really. The film made me feel like I’d just had some kind of heart attack and that I’d been blown apart and remade again, for want of a better metaphor. The emotional rollercoaster it took you on was incredible and very surreal. Hearing the drums slowly building up tempo on the very first bit of the soundtrack brings you right back to the moment it ended.

I knew from the second the film started that I was going to love it, from the moment I saw Miles Teller playing the drums in his practice room. The setting of the film I could relate to, and perhaps the motives behind his playing – how intense it got very quickly, because of his drive and passion to succeed. Messages in the film such as the drive for perfection, ambition and having everything in your life centred on his love for music were very interesting, and poignant. Also, J.K Simmons part was amazing, he was a villain, but you were totally routing for Miles all along, even if he didn’t have much of a character behind his drumming.

The other thing I LOVE about this film is the soundtrack, I am now a little bit obsessed. A friend of mine got me into big band type music, and this film completely tore that apart and rebuilt it again, I love the way that they just completely took big band music and made it accessible and fun. The music made me just want to get up and dance. I’m currently listening to the soundtrack and dancing whilst I type, air drums are happening here.

So in conclusion, go and see this film, because it is amazing and you will not regret it!
