BOOK REVIEW NUMBER 2
THE MANIFESTO ON HOW TO BE INTERESTING BY HOLLY BOURNE
A friend once said to me “someone has been paid to make
these book covers look beautiful for you to pick it up, so if it interests me
the book probably will”. That has stuck in my mind quite a lot since she said
that and now whenever I choose books I do judge it on the front cover –
although I have been surprised often.
This book caught my eye in Waterstones a few months ago and
I finally decided to buy it and see what the fuss is all about. From the first
chapter I was hooked, although it was a little clichéd, it was still really
well written and it drew me in. What I love most about this book is that it’s
not all about falling in love and finding your prince charming. Yes, that has
come into play in this book but it doesn’t quite play out in the way you were
expecting. The book explores a lot of different aspects including cross-sex
friendships, mental illness, how this girl ultimately becomes happy.
Holly Bourne accurately captures the day and age we live in,
along with the emphasis of social media and the blogging world – which ultimately
actually peaked my interest and brought the book to quite a satisfactory ending.
Now, I’m not going to go and spoil the book for you but what I will say is that
if you’re anywhere from 15 – 20 then this book is probably for you, even if you’re
a guy reading this. As a guy you might think it’s about cliques and teenage
girls, but it is much more than that and you might surprise yourself.
