THE WOMBATS AT THE O2 ACADEMY OXFORD
Definitely one of the craziest gigs I’ve ever been to –
being surrounded by a sea of 75% men drinking a lot of beer and jumping around
like it was their last day on earth. The Wombats definitely have a very
eclectic and diverse fan base, but then the Wombats have been around for quite
a long time and they are on their 3rd album, and after a successful
first 2 they had a lot to live up to.
The first thing I realised when they started playing was the
amount of big hits that the band has, from Let’s Dance to Joy Division to Kill
the Director to Moving to New York. It is definitely something that frightened
me somewhat as I had no idea I knew the words to so many of their songs.
Regardless, the band were incredible, the atmosphere was
buzzing throughout the whole gig and there was not one song where I didn’t
dance (but that’s not uncommon for me). Their new album is something that
requires perhaps a particular music taste. It’s definitely a marmite album, as
I myself love it, but I know people that really aren’t keen. But being a fan of
the Wombats for their other two albums it is definitely something different
that we needed as fans.
I am really impressed with the way they handled the stage
with all 3 playing a part in the entertainment of each song. Overall, the
success that they’ve had so far definitely played a part in their confidence
and their ability to play the crowd – you could tell they have played many gigs
before.
